Extreme vulnerability incoming: While I've always written about heartbreak, depression, mental health struggles - many of my recent (and upcoming) songs have leaned into themes of heartbreak. I keep my personal life pretty private from the internet. When I first started writing this album two years ago, I was falling in love. I was also starting to show signs of psychosis due to my long term battle with PTSD and the meds I take for that. These are two extremes. Love and a psychotic break. They don't mix well. I was hospitalized a few times before tour but didn't want to cancel it. There was one night I ended up hospitalized, and convinced the staff I was fine so I could be discharged and get to the studio and keep working on the album. I was so unfocused on my own wellbeing, it was unhealthy. As long as I was working, I wasn't thinking. That was good enough for me. Fast forward a month, with my mental health at rock bottom and my relationship hanging by a thread, I hit the road for tour. Our second venue cancelled on us, we hit a deer and totaled the van heading to Nashville. I was falling apart halfway through the run. I got the text the morning of the last day of tour, a few hours before the show - "I'm leaving you for somebody else". "UNCLEAR" came from that exact moment. Sonically, I knew it needed to be chaotic. Vocally, distressed. Lyrically, angry and desperate. I wanted the volume to jump, the soundscape to shift dramatically. My life was in absolute chaos, and that's what this song was born in. Chaos. The rest of the songs coming out on this album touch on this story a little more. The extreme highs, the extreme lows. Some of the lyrical content gets very intense. It's one of the most vulnerable pieces of art I've ever created, and I'm just as nervous as I am excited to release it. I'm healing now. Things are looking up. I'm undergoing treatment and I'm learning to love life again. I will never forget that while I went through the most difficult period of my life - you all stayed. You all kept showing up. So I'll be dedicating this entire album to the Gloom Squad. This album is just the beginning - my path forward is clearer than ever. isitjosh v3 coming this summer.
